A lot is already happening in Apeldoorn; takethe activities of the New Tech Park, theambitions of the water board with the Climate Channeland the innovations of companieslike Remeha and Hollander. But it has no clear address. Apeldoorn, withZwitsal, however, it has everything to become the most sustainablecity of the Netherlands, with a clear address. Hereby we want to combine knowledge and skill with stayingliving and recreation. A place that is not obtrusive, and where people consciously andunconsciously inspired. As Apeldoorn actually always has been, witness this image from the 1954 booklet Gelderland:"Apeldoorn located at a crucial crossroadsin the Netherlands: a key city for thenew housing, new industry, nature and recreation."So it is not enough to develop Zwitsal climate-neutraldevelopment and declare it finished in adeclare it finished in a few years. The key to its success will be that the complex, the public space and the program management be held together for a long time - preferably for eternity. We are going to string together the many existingstring together ambitions and initiatives, strengthen and enrich them. We connect the manyalready involved and still to be involvedto the (quality) ambitions. The cultural-historicalvalues of Zwitsal are cherishedand are leading in the spatial qualityquality (ZALF). We preserve almost everythingand bring the chimney back to itsold height. This will be the highest point. But we are also giving it new meaning. The additional new construction will notdominate and will be super sustainable. We are going to build all new construction in wood. How could it be otherwise, in the capitalof the Veluwe? An additional advantage is thatyou build quickly and that it offers a structureand architectural quality thatseamlessly matches the dimensions ofthe Zwitsal complex, without becoming competitivebecome. For the inside of the new buildingswe bet on flexibility. In this waywe anticipate the necessary changes in thefuture. We are going to realize flexible lofts. This makes it possible to filla space now and in the future to transform itinto something the community needs at thatneeds at that time. Whether it be work orresidential spaces. Because of the fixedmodule sizes, for example, twoone-bedroom apartment can be convertedinto one larger apartment, or a largerlive-work apartment into a number of smaller ones.In this way, a robust andmixed live/work landscape, with agreat diversity of living and working formsfor different user groups. Theflexibility ensures that users andwill continue to be served at Zwitsal, evenif their needs change. This flexibility is not foreign to the city and istruly Apeldoornish as far as we are concerned. It hasproven in the revolutionary CentralManagement office by architect Hertzberger, which gave users the greatest possiblefreedom in the layout and useof the office: "It is the fundamentalinauthenticity of the building and the many otherimposed and hidden, left open possibilitiesthat the users want to arouseto color in, so that everyone's choice and thuseveryone's point of view to the surfaceis brought to the surface". Here it was proven that ifyou challenge an Apeldoorner to fill inthis freedom, he seizes the opportunity. We also find it crucial that Zwitsalfeels connected to the inner cityand the surrounding neighborhoods. And vice versa:that the surrounding districts and the inner cityfeel connected to Zwitsal. Thereforeis a good infrastructure for cyclists, public transport and motoristscrucial. And that is why we are looking for transport conceptsto replace the private car, such as shared cars. If we eliminate the needeliminate the need for lots of parking spaces throughshared car ownership, then we can free up alot of space freed up.But all these plans are just a future dream, until we can have more intensive exchange of views with our fellow Swiss and Apeldoorners. And until we get to hear even further what ideas inspire them and what solutions they want to see. Therefore, this newspaper does not contain so much a blueprint of our plans ,but a picture of our dream and of the opportunities we see. And it gives insight into the process we envision for making Zwitsal a fantastic place - a place that deserves the pride of the city.
