To transform into an airport city Schiphol has to become a better place to stay. It means that the infrastructural knot should be enriched with a divers public domain that can handle new inhabitation based on consumption, leisure and entertainment. The new city will indulge the surrounding context and turning it into an conditioned experience. Turning restrictions into possibilities to create a better place to stay.
For the desired growth Schiphol has to physically expand its territory. Secondly, to attract more high-end programme, the location qualities should be dramatically raised. The problem is the self-produced barriers, that lead to development restrictions: sound, pollution, bird-free zones. The wish for expansion stands opposite to the self produced restrictions. To become a city Schiphol has to overcome this paradox.

As a basic condition for the future city Schiphol should cross its borders, connect to the local context and invest in high performance, public spaces. Using the existing water network will increase its hub-function and creates the basic condition for a sustainable development of a city fabric. The new connection is a public strip that connects the Plaza with the harbor.
The strip-like avenue will be a glass covered passage that enables a high quality and conditioned environment. Programmatically it will be vertically split in two. The former 2-dimensional separation of air and land side is stretched all through the strip. Passing the border becomes the fundamental experience. The strip becomes a large terminal that combines authentic leisure landscapes with the product-oriented seduction machine.
