De Rotterdamse Schouwburg (the city theatre) is a cultural institution filled with creativity and expression, but the current building does not show it. the numerous daily shows and rehearsals going on inside as well as the multitude of visitors offer enough possibilities to exhibit all this activity to the public and the city. By taking advantage of its central location, the theatre can be connected with other functions, drastically increasing the liveliness of the place. The adjacent Schouwburgplein, café Floor and the courtyard at the back of the Schouwburg are good starting points.
ZUS proposes to make a continuing passage that connects the square, the theatre, the courtyard and the streets; a semipublic space which is open to the general public the biggest part of the day. The passage will incorporate several functions like a kiosk, a wintergarden, an indoor square, a ticket office, a café and a balcony. These spaces will be organized in such a way that they will form one continuous lively urban space. This intervention will greatly increase the openness and the hospitability of the Rotterdamse Schouwburg.
