The Dressmachine

Why is pink a girlish colour? And who decides that men do not wear skirts? Clothes and fashion should not be underestimated as a means of communication in public space, and it is a challenge to call this form of cover into question. The installation ‘The DressMachine’ provides a context for posing such questions and gives fashion a direct opportunity to put deeply ingrained ideas up for discussion.

The basic structure is a panel with a hole in it in the shape of a human being. A garment hangs on one side, with a panel containing a mirror immediately opposite. By standing behind the panel, you can see through the cutaway and the reflection in the mirror see how the garment fits. In this way, the threshold to trying out a different identity is lowered considerably.
